Backbiting and Listening to It Is a Sin in Islam

Remember that, just as backbiting is prohibited for those who utter it, it is also prohibited for those who listen to it and favor it.  Anybody who hears someone about to engage in the banned form of backbiting must discourage them from performing it. It is best to withdraw from that gathering where this stuff is going on. If one has the capacity to refuse it with their tongue or to stop the backbiting by trying to change the subject, they must do so. But if one fails to do so, he has pleaded guilty to one count of disobedience (i.e. sinned).

If he is obliged to remain in the company where backbiting is occurring because he is afraid of prohibiting it, or if he prohibits it but it is not acknowledged by him and he cannot identify a method to remove himself from them, he is restricted from hearing to and concentrating to the backbiting. Rather, he should remember Allah (SWT) with both his mouth and heart. Or he must concentrate on anything else to distract himself from paying heed to it. After that, listening to it with zero interest rate will not make him sinful.

Exceptions of Backbiting

There are relatively few instances in which it is appropriate to criticize another individual's flaws. It is critical not to permit the prevalence of these exclusions to allow for transgression into sin. Several of these scenarios include:

·         to safeguard Muslims from the evils of others, especially in circumstances in which one is required to testify for the honesty of a marriage prospect

·         when the individual being discussed does not hide his transgressions of Divine commandments

·         to explain the flaw of a patient to a physician for therapy reasons

How to Protect Themselves from Backbiting?

When somebody has been guilty of this heinous conduct, he or she must cleanse it and feed the roots of honesty, togetherness, and unity in his or her heart. Moreover, you should think about the consequences of this sin in this life and in the next. Repent and ask forgiveness for yourself as well as the backbitten person. Additionally, you can also perform Umrah to cleanse your past committed sins and to prevent yourself from doing so in the future. For this purpose, you may attain 8 nights Umrah packages to fully indulge yourself in worshipping Allah Almighty. Also, if a person is involved in praying, he will be less interested in such worldly matters and even after that, he would know that committing a sin is not worth it.
